ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability
ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is a global network of more than 2,500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Active in 125 countries, we influence sustainability policy and drive local action for low emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient and circular development. ICLEI Europe provides Members in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and West Asia with a voice on European and international stages, a platform to connect with peers and tools to drive positive environmental, economic and social change. ICLEI Europe works closely with an extended network of local and regional governments and partners on a broad range of topics.
City of Lisbon
Lisbon is a centuries-old city with many stories to tell. Portugal's capital, known as the city of the seven hills, is home to 545,000 inhabitants. In Lisbon, tradition meets culture, entertainment, and technological innovation. The city has been awarded the prize for Best City Break Destination five times and is famous for the hospitality with which it welcomes visitors.
Lisbon has a clear position in terms of combating climate change. By implementing several measures – which were enhanced thanks to being a signatory to the European Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy – Lisbon has committed to the goals of the Paris Agreement. The city joined the EU Mission "100 Climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030" and is actively implementing a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan.
Lisbon is committed to being one of Europe's most innovative, intelligent and sustainable cities. Steps to this end include creating the Lisbon Unicorn Factory, a programme that supports start-ups to scale up and unlock their growth potential. The "Lisboa Unicorn Capital" brand launched in May 2023 aggregates all innovation-focused business hubs linked to the city's ecosystem and continue positioning Lisbon as a global hub for entrepreneurship, innovation and technology. Working with its innovation community will ensure Lisbon's success as an innovation capital.
